Install CouchPotatOS
Boot from the USB stick and walk through the installer with a controller.
Start the installer
-
Plug the USB stick and a controller into the PC, and connect a network cable if you have one.
-
Turn the PC on and press the boot menu key straight away. It depends on the maker:
Maker Boot menu key ASUS F8 Acer, Dell, Gigabyte, Lenovo F12 ASRock, MSI F11 HP F9 If none of these work, the key is usually shown briefly at power-on, or you can choose the stick in the firmware settings (often Del or F2).
-
Choose the USB stick. If it’s listed twice, pick the entry that starts with UEFI.
The installer starts on its own. Music plays while it runs; press View on the controller to turn it off.
Secure Boot
You can leave Secure Boot on. If it is on, the installer first shows a Secure Boot page that asks to add the CouchPotatOS key. Choose to add it, and the PC restarts into a blue screen, the MOK manager. That screen needs a keyboard:
- Choose Enroll MOK, then Continue, then Yes.
- Type the password
123456and press Enter. - Choose Reboot. The installer comes back.
You can also skip the page. The blue screen will then show briefly at later starts and goes away on its own after a few seconds.
The four steps
You move with the D-pad or left stick, choose with A and go back with B.
- Welcome. Shows whether you’re online. Pick a Wi-Fi network and type its password on the on-screen keyboard, or use a cable. Network settings also let you set a fixed IP address and choose the server updates come from; automatic is fine for almost everyone.
- Region. Language, time zone and keyboard layout. Your Wi-Fi and region settings carry over to the installed system.
- Storage. Choose the drive to install on. Everything on it is erased. Drives smaller than 32 GB, drives that are in use, and the installer stick itself are shown greyed out.
- Install. The installer downloads the latest CouchPotatOS (about 2.3 GB), checks its signature, and writes it to the drive in one go. A potato walks along the progress bar while it works.
If the connection drops, the download carries on where it left off. If anything goes wrong, the drive is wiped, so it can never start a half-written system. Just try again.
When it’s done, remove the USB stick and restart.
